5 Unforgettable Highlights From Expo 2020

After a year of delay, Expo 2020 has finally begun in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and it is as fantastic and as futuristic as anticipated, getting people excited to see what the world has to offer. With a total of 192 nations taking part, the 182-day event is said to showcase anything touching on the world's arts and cultures, business opportunities, entertainment, innovation, and technology. Undoubtedly, a lot has happened that may be hard to keep up with, so here are our five top highlights at Expo 2020 so far.

An Epic Opening Ceremony

Expo 2020 started with a bang, bringing together a total of 3,000 attendants and 1,000 speakers at Al Wasl Plaza. Visitors were treated to stunning visuals beamed across Al Wasl Plaza's dome, live performances by A-list performers and orchestra, and falling dominos revealing the flags of 192 participating nations. The UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020, His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahayan, welcomed attendants to the event with his speech, stating that "Expo 2020 Dubai will provide a significant platform for all people to connect, discuss and work together."

Robots of the Future

Undoubtedly, one of the key highlights at Expo 2020 are the robots, 152 of them to be precise. For decades, humans have been fascinated by the concept of making robots to aid us in the workforce. Others, such as those present at the event, are programmed to cater to our specific needs and preferences. In fact, the robots currently being showcased were designed by Terminus Group to handle each one of five specific tasks. For instance, Opti Robot, which is like the mascot robot, was made specifically to welcome guests at the Expo. Others include the Attendant Robot is designed to guide guests to specific areas at the event, the Delivery Robot can provide goods to visitors as well as restock, and the Patrol Robot is equipped with an HD facial recognition camera for 24-hour security. The Vending Trolley can handle similar functionality as the Delivery Robot, but it also comes with the ability of distributing various materials such as maps, booklets, catering trays, and more.

Saudi Arabia’s Record-Breaking Pavilion

Starting things off with a bang, Saudi Arabia set not one, not two, but three Guinness World Records with its stunning pavilion. With emphasis on its ongoing transformation, the Kingdom’s five-story pavilion can be described as a large window that opens to the sky, with multiple LED displays to dazzle visitors with vibrant colors. Indeed, the Saudi Pavilion is reported to have one of the most sustainable designs in the world. In line with the nation’s Vision 2030, the main showcase at the venue focuses on Saudi Arabia’s economic and business opportunities, as guests get to learn more about the Kingdom’s past, present, and future.

Uganda’s National Day Celebrations & $650 Million Deal

Uganda touched hearts all over by celebrating its National Day at Expo 2020 Dubai and in attendance was its President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was welcomed by Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan. The country also made headlines by securing a grand total of $650 million in business deals. The East African nation has several opportunities touching on agriculture, minerals, infrastructure, transportation, among others. Representatives hope to secure up to $4 billion worth of investments, which is said to be enough to recover from the economic impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Monumental Water Feature That Defies Gravity

Art, entertainment, and technology are key highlights at Expo 2020 as visitors are being treated to the meeting of art and technology in many fascinating ways, such as with the German Pavilion, for instance, where a band of robots perform some of Beethoven's iconic works. However, there is one showcase that is grabbing the attention of many and that is the Expo 2020 Water Feature standing tall between Al Wasl Plaza and Jubilee Park. This monumental fountain is a testament to the forces of water, earth, and fire. Rising 13 meters into the sky, its drops giant sheets of water during the day into a multi-hued circle of fire, and at night defies gravity, sending the water upwards towards the sky.
