After 2020’s Zoom edition, the stars didn’t hold back when it came to treating us to some show-stopping fashion on the Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet Sunday. Whether in LA’s Microsoft Theater or London’s SoHo House, our favourite stylemakers served up ultra-glam looks at the limited-attendance event, hosted by Cedric The Entertainer.
Neon made waves, with Michaela Coel and Kaley Cuoco rocking the vivid hue. “I May Destroy You” creator Coel, who made history by becoming the first Black woman to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category, chose a head-turning neon two-piece by Christopher John Rogers. The actress, writer and director, who was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, looked radiant in the strapless torso-bearing bustier, which came with a giant silk organza bow at the back that streamed onto the ground, and draped ankle-length column skirt in cotton twill, with overlay.
Meanwhile Cuoco, who was nominated for the first time, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, made head turns in a taffeta Vera Wang dress in the highlighter shade. “The Flight Attendant” actress’s dress had pretty handcrafted silk and taffeta floral detail on the shoulder straps, hand ruching in the middle, a revealing slit and bubble hem. Anya Taylor-Joy, another Best Actress nominee in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie section, also stunned in a custom vibrant yellow Dior Haute Couture look. “The Queen's Gambit” star channelled Old Hollywood glamour in a fitting champagne halter neck gown that stood out because of its remarkable yellow shawl, complete with a long train. The backless two-piece creation also featured delicate jewelled chains.
As usual, red was another winning hue, with celebrities like Sarah Paulson and Mandy Moore, both in Carolina Herrera, Catherine O'Hara and “Black-ish” actor Tracee Ellis Ross adding tons of drama thanks to the striking colour. The latter, who was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the sixth time, looked disco-ready in a sparkling 70s-inspired one-shoulder creation with embroidered mini pearls by Valentino.
Yara Shahidi, who was decked out in Dior Haute Couture, must have also received the bright coloured memo. The “Grownish” actress stepped out in one of this year’s most popular colours, sharp green. The 50s-style, off-the-shoulder tea-length cocktail gown had a flared skirt, cinched bodice and draped tulle sleeves. Plus, another star on board the colourful train was MJ Rodriguez, the “Pose” actress who made history as the first trans woman to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She wore a gorgeous light blue floor-sweeping vintage Atelier Versace dress, which came with a thigh-high slit and sculptural draping at the waist.
However, some of the evening’s best moments did include looks that came in more somber colours. Lead Actress in a Comedy Series winner Jean Smart looked really elegant in a black custom Ralph Lauren number, with the “Hacks” star wearing the long-sleeve turtleneck draped evening dress with aplomb. Additionally, “WandaVision” actor Elizabeth Olsen went for understated glamour in a dress designed by The Row, the label helmed by her twin sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley. Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie, the star looked ethereal in a minimalist floor-length V-neck ivory-coloured dress with standout billowy sleeves. And there was Kerry Washington killing it in custom Etro. The Italian brand gave the classic slinky satin slip dress an edgy twist by adding a corset belt to the grey gown that came with a cowl neck.
