Akira Back, The W Dubai, The Palm

Akira Back is the sleek and sophisticated restaurant by professional snowboarder-turned-Michelin starred-chef Akira. The restaurant is renowned for its fantastic sushi rolls and tuna pizza.

Other stand out dishes include hot and cold plates of robata grills and spectacular seafood, with vegan options in to boot. Akira Back’s ambience makes it the perfect place for a date night to remember.

Netsu, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira

Netsu is a highly acclaimed Japanese steakhouse by Chef Ross Shonhan and is renowned for Japanese dishes made in the traditional technique known as, Warayaki, straw fire cooking, making it the world’s hottest grill in a restaurant.

The statement piece is the huge Warayaki grill right in the centre of the restaurant with flames that burn at 900°C and shoot two metres into the air. On any given visit, it would be rude not to indulge in a Warayaki-style steak.

Kinoya, The Greens

Kinoya is the newest Japanese joint in town and its near enough impossible to get a reservation… Now open in The Greens, Kinoya comes from chef Neha Mishra who started out with supper clubs, and is well-known for her ramen. Kinoya is her first restaurant.

Izakaya and ramen is what the restaurant prides itself on. Izakaya is a traditional Japanese dining experience consisting of drinks and snacks served up in a welcoming environment.

Kinoya also has a dedicated ramen counter, a chef’s table, plus two eight-seater private dining areas. The restaurant prides itself on being highly authentic and noteworthy dishes include the ramen, karaage, katsu sando, and miso butter aubergine to name just a few.

REIF Japanese Kushiyak, Dar Wasl Mall

Affordable and casual, REIF Japanese Kushiyak offers up freshly-grilled, skewered meats inspired by Japanese robata restaurants in this cosy eatery by former Zuma and Play Chef, Reif Othman. The restaurant offers a family-style sharing concept showcasing affordable, unconventional Japanese street food served with Reif’s signature twist.

The menu features must have dishes including ramens, claypot rice, sushi and traditional Japanese desserts. Reif also offers a special daily menu that uses specific seasonal ingredients from Japan.

Kiku, Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Garhoud

Kiku has been around for quite a while in Dubai’s otherwise transient restaurant scene and for good reason. What makes Kiku a fabulous experience is that specialty ingredients are flown in from Hokkaido, Kansai, Nagano and the markets of Tsukiji.
