According To Your Horoscope, What's Your Decorating Style? (Part 2)

Is astrology, which so many people are turning to while feeling disconnected, the answer to your spring décor dilemma?

There isn’t a better season than spring to spruce up your interiors. It’s the perfect time to showcase your next-level creativity, especially when it comes to choosing unexpected colour schemes and flaunting that love of nature.

According to research, people often turn to astrology in response to stress and anxiety and when aiming for future goals. And there certainly has been a huge surge of interest in looking to the stars for truth and guidance during the pandemic. While there was rising interest in astrology before COVID-19 hit us hard, especially with millennials, last year seems to have really fuelled the fire.

So as we continue looking for support, connection and self-knowledge, our astrological signs are definitely worth looking into when contemplating options for a serious décor and garden upgrade this spring. Thankfully, apartment rental brand Essential Living has teamed up with colour expert Momtaz Begum-Hossain for a guide highlighting which colours and plants we need in our homes, according to our star signs.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Colours: One of the most popular signs to be around, Librans are well-known for being humane, diplomatic and incredibly good at dealing with people. And a certain colour palette combination for a Libra helps promote balance and harmony.

Spring is the perfect time to bring light pastels into your home décor, which is why Momtaz recommends a “minimalist and timeless” mix of pastel pink, mint and lilac, perfect for enhancing a room that may seem a little too dull.

One of the best ways to do this is with the 7-2-1 ratio technique, which entails choosing three shades, one neutral, another one that’s colourful but light, and a third that’s vibrant, by dividing them across your space with a ratio of 7-2-1. While seven-tenths of the room should be neutral, two-tenths should be sprightlier and colourful, leaving the final tenth bold. This will add colour to your space in a non-domineering and equalised way. 

Flower: Edible pansies are perfect for small celebrations around the season or bigger ones like Easter and Mother's Day, and also the ideal pairing for a Libran’s garden. As well as looking beautiful, the flowers have many health benefits, including treating respiratory conditions such as asthma, whooping could and bronchitis.

Scorpio (October 23- November 21)

Colours: Scorpios are recognised for their passionate and fiery nature, but there’s a lot more to them. They’re also intelligent, resourceful, and what can be described as a little stubborn. 

To match their passionate personalities, hues such as crimson, black and maroon are the top choice to foster and invigorate intelligence. Homes with accent black walls are often spotted in décor magazines, where they’re highly stylised to create jaw-droppingly beautiful pictures. However, it’s important to be careful when incorporating black yourself, as you don’t want to darken your space. The trick here is if you have neutrals on the walls and in your interiors, use a dramatic black or dark grey trim on the doors or windows to make them pop.

Flower: To underpin a Scorpio’s bold and brave character, black poppies are the ideal garden addition. The stars of the late spring flower garden certainly stand out from the crowd.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

Colours: Sagittarians are adventurous, imaginative and funny, so it makes sense they should have an audacious and enjoyable combination for their spring interiors. According to Momtaz, humour is best represented by a striking mix of lime green, coral and buttermilk. 

You can start with your walls, as Momtaz believes light green is a dependable colour. “It looks attractive but also carries the positive energies of green, without being overpowering,” she says.

Greenery: Elderberries, which have bushes that are extremely easy to grow and care for, are the chosen plant for Sagittarians. Thriving in full sun or partial shade, they are a delightful ingredient for making fresh breakfast smoothies!

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

Colours: Capricorns are known for being independent, self-assured and even a little bit stubborn, but one thing they’re definitely not is boring, so their homes shouldn’t be either. 

Holding a great deal of responsibility, Capricorns are best reflected in a mixture of emerald green, dusky pink and beige, a bright, yet firm and reliable combination.

“Beige will always be a safe colour, best reserved for corridors, or a home office,” Momtaz believes. Although it can make your space feel a little clinical rather than comforting, pairing it alongside emerald green or a dusty pink has the power to transform your home for the spring.

Greenery: With Capricorn’s dependable quality, a silver birch tree is a fitting pairing. Low maintenance and in bloom in the spring, the trees need to be pruned in the winter months to keep its ornamental shape.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Colours: Aquarians are creative, thoughtful and intelligent, yet they can also be uncompromising, which can make them seem impatient. The experts believe hues like white, duck-egg blue and soft pink can help calm an Aquarian down and alleviate stress. Coincidentally, homeware brand Laura Ashley describes duck egg blue and pastel blush pink as the perfect interior combinations, working beautifully together in any part of your home.  

Flower: Out in the garden, Aquarians should consider growing dandelions. They grow best in well-drained, fertile soil and prefer sun, but will be just fine in partial shade.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Colours: As well as being soft souls who enjoy embracing their sensitive sides, Pisceans are creative and artistic and have the ability to always empathise with others, whatever the situation.

Momtaz says sensitivity is best represented in the bedroom by a soft but colourful combination of peach, mint and baby blue. A beautiful shade of green, like Dulux’s Green Parrot is recommended as painting your walls green can help in creating a calm and peaceful vibe. (Did you know people who sleep in green rooms get an average of seven hours and 30 minutes of sleep per night?)

Greenery: In spring, we want to bring the outdoors in as much as possible, and fortunately for Pisces, ferns, which make terrific indoor container plants, are the suggested choice. They have low light requirements and will boost oxygen levels in your home this spring.
