Meet Hazel Zakariya: Queen of Artistic Smoothie Bowls
For many, cooking not just a labor of love but an art as well, and one woman in New Zealand is taking the art in culinary arts to whole other level. Hazel Zakariya is creating delicious intricate paintings made using only edible ingredients.
As a base, she uses breakfast smoothies made from cream, milk, fruits, and berries, and for the paintings, she uses coconut cream, almond milk, spices, herbs, and vegetable powders. With every bowl, she chooses a vibrant color palette, and plays with textures, shades of color, and shading to give depth to the images.
By literally playing with food, Zakariya is able to create stunning and appetizing art using simple tools like skewers and a table knife. Most of Zakariya’s paintings are of real and fictional animals such as unicorns and hummingbirds, with the occasional pop culture imagery here and there, such as the Night King from “Game of Thrones” and the iconic dance scene from “La La Land.”
Zakariya didn’t always use breakfast bowls for her creations. When she started out, she chose soup as her slate. On the Martha Stewart website, she explained that, at first, “I was trying to garnish my butternut squash soup with some coconut cream swirls when I got the idea […] The swirls didn’t quite turn out as planned, so I added a bit of pesto and made them into a tree instead.” After that, she switched to smoothies, and the rest is history.
Although she puts together truly creative and intricate food art, Zakariya isn’t actually an artist. She works as a market analyst, expressing her creative side outside working hours. “I’ve rediscovered my love for painting and drawing,” she said. “And it’s great to create art that is edible and tasty too. My husband and I share them as a treat.”
