Diriyah's Master Plan Establishes Eco-Standard Through International Award

Diriyah's master plan has reached a significant milestone as the first phase of the project has been awarded the prestigious platinum level LEED for Cities certification by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

This globally recognized accreditation, part of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, signifies the highest level of sustainability, providing a structure for creating healthy, efficient, and environmentally friendly buildings and communities. LEED is the most widely known sustainability certification scheme worldwide.

In order to create resilient, green, inclusive, and smart cities, LEED for Cities provides a uniform way to assess and report community performance. This certification highlights Diriyah's dedication to a future that is more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable, making it a pioneering endeavor in the Middle East.

Diriyah Company's CEO, Jerry Inzerillo, expressed pride in receiving LEED platinum certification for the first phase of the Diriyah master plan. He emphasized the project's eco-friendly approach, preserving the city's heritage and values. This recognition by the USGBC highlights Diriyah's global impact.

Diriyah's first master plan phase includes a luxurious mixed-use development with amenities for entertainment, shopping, cultural, commercial, and residential use, strategically located around public squares and open spaces. The urban design fosters a cooling microclimate with narrow streets, courtyards, and car-free zones, promoting sustainability and pedestrian-friendly areas.

With SR63.2 billion ($17 billion) of ongoing construction projects, Diriyah's commitment to sustainability is evident through its investments in green infrastructure and environmentally conscious urban planning. The project has set new benchmarks for its peers, setting a higher standard for sustainable urban development.

The USGBC's President and CEO, Peter Templeton, highlighted the transformational effects of LEED on buildings and emphasized its potential for cities and communities, particularly in terms of environmental and public health. In line with the sustainability objectives of the USGBC, the first phase of Diriyah's master plan is driving the movement towards a better world.
