Arab women have come a long way over the years and have been some of the world’s most noted trailblazers. In many regions where one’s environment can provide them with the tools and skills required for success, there are others in which success can be a challenging feat – be it due to lack of resources, opportunities, or even the prominence of traditional gender roles. With that being said, Arab women are a force to be reckoned with, as they continue to succeed against all the odds.

Today, as we honor the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are celebrating these incredible Arab female scientists who are noted for their work and efforts within their respective fields…

Dr. Lama Al Abdi - Saudi Arabia

In 2020, Dr. Lama Al Abdi was noted as one of 6 female scientists in the Middle Eastern region who worked towards a breakthrough in their field of research. Dr. Al Abdi's work as a biochemist has been predominantly focused on the connection between gene expression and the development of non-genetic diseases.

Ayah Bdeir - Lebanon

Ayah Bdeir’s passion for science and entrepreneurialism led her field of focus to be on educational robotics. In 2011, she founded LittleBits in hopes to create an open-source library of modular electronics.

Dr. Abeer Al Bawab - Jordan

Dr. Abeer Al Bawab is a professor of chemistry at the University of Jordan, and has successfully excelled through her research in physical chemistry. Recognized for her efforts, she has received a number of international awards, including the prestigious IUPAC 2021 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering award.

Dr. Nour Al-Sabeeh - Kuwait

An assistant professor within the Physiology Department at Kuwait University, Dr. Al Sabeeh received the L’Oreal-UNESCO Middle East Fellowship in 2019, due to her research focusing on the various underlying mechanisms within the development of type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Maryam Al Yammahi - UAE

Also noted for her work during the sixth edition of L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Middle East Fellowship in 2019, Dr. Al Yammahi's research concentrates on data science, big data, and artificial intelligence as main drivers of the decision-making process in every field. She is the Assistant Dean for Students at College of IT UAE University.

Dr. Iman Al Mansour – Saudi Arabia

Dr. Iman Al Mansour was instrumental in developing Saudi Arabia’s first vaccine against the spread of the coronavirus. Her research’s findings were also published in the scientific Pharmaceutical Journal and have been lauded by fellow experts.

Dr. Khawla Al Khuraya – Saudi Arabia

Dr. Khawla Al Khuyraya was the first to discover the cancer-triggering gene, FOSM1, in the human body. A physician and pathology professor, she is currently a cancer specialist at King Faysal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre whilst also largely contributing and making changes within Saudi Arabia’s Shoura Council.
