These Four Art Exhibitions Are Showing In Doha This Year

The world is just weeks away from the FIFA World Cup 2022 and Qatar is preparing for the influx of visitors and football fans from all over the world. Not just hosting a month of intense football matches, the country is also hosting a plethora of unique art events in the form of exhibitions, installations, showcases among a number of others. This week, four new exhibitions were announced and this is what you need to know about them…

Safar

Safar is an exhibition that highlights the struggles of Afghan refugees as they were evacuated from their homes. The exhibition explores the experiences of the refugees from a primary perspective in a bid to highlight their stories and struggles following the evacuation. Safar also highlights the importance of Afghanistan due to it’s heritage and history having been an epicenter of academia and art for thousands of years.

The exhibition was unveiled by Qatar Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, and was organized by the Museum of Islamic Art in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The exhibition is on view at MIA Park until 24th January 2024.

Art Mill Museum 2030

Qatar is expected to be opening three major new museums over the next 10 years – including the Art Mill. This particular exhibition, Art Mill Museum 2030, will highlight what the museum will look like and more. The show will be available to view at Al-Najada Heritage House #15 and the site of the flour mill on Doha’s Corniche, built in the 1990s, that is potentially being reimagined as the site of the museum. Each venue will present different aspects of the development of the Art Mill Museum and the exhibition is free.

Back to the Future: Pop-up Studios

A new village, otherwise referred to as a “fereej,” now being referred to as Back to the Future: Pop-up Studios, is set to unite professionals across a number of creative industries. This initiative is part of Qatar Creates, which is an ongoing national cultural movement that promotes, curates and highlights the diversity of cultural activities in Qatar. Running until 23rd January 2023, Fereej Al-Najada will host Qatar-based creatives in seven heritage houses, in which they will have the chance to showcase their artistic expression to the World Cup audiences through open studios, art exhibitions, digital installations, and retail stores. Visitors will also be able to experience an authentic Qatari neighborhood, its historical architecture and design, and local crafts.

Lusail Museum: Tales of a Connected World

This exhibition is a preview of another one of the country’s upcoming museums. Lusail Museum: Tales of a Connected World at QM Gallery Al-Riwaq is being presented as part of Qatar Creates and open until 1st April 2023, and will reveal plans for Lusail Museum, its architectural design and its world-class collection of art. The Lusail Museum building is being designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron, and will be constructed in Lusail, the home of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani, the founder of the state of Qatar.
