Ahead of Emirati Women's Day!

Every year, August 28 marks Emirati Women's Day, a time when we celebrate the trailblazers from all walks of life who have left their mark across the UAE and beyond. For this occasion, we are taking a look at five female Emirati artists and their contributions to the world of art.

Zeinab Al Hashemi

Zeinab Al Hashemi is a conceptual artist who has been fascinated by UAE's transformation throughout the years. Through her art, she builds stories that take apart our understanding of our reality and surroundings. Her large-scale installations are reminiscent of Emirati landscapes, while also being contrasted with building materials, many of which have been featured at high-profile exhibitions.

Farah Al Qasimi

Farah Al Qasimi is a musician, but also a photographer known for showcasing contemporary lifestyle. Many of her exhibitions have touched on themes such as "The World Is Sinking" focusing on locations in and around Dubai, "Um Al Naar" featuring jinns from Emirati folklore, and "Everybody was Invited to a Party.”

Dami Sami

Dina "Dami Sami" is an illustrator who uses art to tell a story, some of which have been featured on billboards across the UAE. Living between Dubai and New York, her artworks often reflect the landscapes, people and other characteristics of both cities. In addition, she has her own artistic company, under which she works with global brands in making creative campaigns.

Maitha Abdalla

Maitha Abdalla is known for her mixed media artworks, which includes both painting and photography, each telling a story in a surreal and vibrant manner. Some themes being touched on include lost childhood memories, human interactions, and so on. Currently, Abdalla is also part of the British-based An Effort Art Residency program.

Maisoon Al Saleh

Maisoon Al Saleh is an illustrator who takes a dive, even literally, below the obvious meaning residing on the surface of stories and accounts of UAE's past. Many of her works have also been showcased at major exhibitions worldwide, including Art Dubai, Palazzo TE Museum, Macedonian Museum, and many others.
