Niswa: A Sex Ed Platform That’s Dedicated To Arab Women

Let’s talk about that one taboo we rarely properly discuss as Arab societies.

Based in Michigan, Niswa (‘women’ in Arabic) is a multimedia platform by Zainab Alradhi that bridges the gap of openly talking about sexual health, our bodies,  our cycles, and informed consent.

Most women will get exposed to hundreds of hormone-disrupting chemicals each day of their lives before they even leave their houses. These chemicals are commonly called xenoestrogens, mimicking the role of real estrogen in the body, which are also linked to a variety of reproductive disorders including endometriosis, PCOS, hormonal imbalances, diabetes, and breast cancer⁣ ⁣ You might be surprised that these chemicals are as close as your cleaning supplies cabinet, kitchen’s pantry, and bathroom shelves. And while the average women is being exposed to hundreds of these chemicals daily, there are few regulation that prohibit companies from using them in products like laundry detergents, shampoo, canned foods, receipts, newspapers, and makeup⁣ ⁣ This is not a panic alert.. It is a wake up call⁣ ⁣ By being aware of how environmental toxins affect us, we can consciously make better choices and enjoy healthier bodies⁣ ⁣ Even though these chemicals are not the main cause for breast cancer, they have been proven to be cancer-causing-agents. They are one piece to a puzzle that I wish we soon get solved⁣ ⁣ Check out our stories for tips on how to reduce exposure⁣ ⁣ ‎معظم النساء تتعرض لمئات من المواد الكيميائية المسببة للاضطرابات الهرمونية بشكل يومي حتى قبل الخروج من المنزل. هذه الهرمونات تسمى بـ "xenoetrogen" بحيث أن الجسم يستقبلها ظناً منه أنها هرمون الاستروجين الطبيعي، و لها ارتباط بالعديد من الاضطرابات التناسلية بما فيها تكيسات المبايض، البطانة المهاجرة، السمنة، و سرطان الثدي⁣ ⁣ ‎قد نستغرب من كون هذه المواد قريبة لنا جداً، إذ قد تسكن دولاب المنظفات المنزلية، دواليب المطبخ، و رفوف دورات المياه. على الرغم من تعرض النساء لهذه المواد بشكل يومي، فإنه لا توجد قوانين تمنع الشركات من استخدامها في منتجاتهم كالشامبو، غسول الملابس، الجرائد، الطعام المعلب، فواتير الشراء، و مستحضرات التجميل⁣ ⁣ ما أذكره هنا ليس مدعاة للذعر، بل هو فرصة لزيادة الوعي⁣ ⁣ حين نعي أثر هذه السموم البيئية على أجسادنا، فإننا نتمكن من اتخاذ قرارات أفضل و الاستمتاع بأجساد أصح⁣ ⁣ ما زالت الدراسات تجهل المسبب الأولي للسرطان، إلا أن هذه المواد الكيميائية مثبتة كونها عامل من العوامل المسببة. هي جزء من الأحجية التي نتمنى حلها قريباً⁣ ⁣ تابعوا ستوري اليوم لمعرفة كيفية تقليص فرص التعرض لهذه المواد

Last week, the women around the world had celebrated the #thxBirthControl Day. Showing their appreciation to their birth control of choice and how it transformed their lives to the better. The practice of birth control, although might seem like a modern one, it actually is not Birth control practices are well documented in both ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia 1550 BC. Historically, women had used plant leaves , stones, and even honey to prevent pregnancy.⁣ ⁣ In societies where abortion was not stigmatized, abortion was used as a form of birth control, too. ⁣ ⁣ Modern birth control methods had, with no doubt, a huge impact on our history as women. It allowed a lot of women to continue their education to have a career to follow their dreams and to dare! It is no secret that mine and my partner’s birth control of choice is the symptothermal method of Fertility awareness The journey that led us to choosing this method was –and still is- an evolving wonderful one. ⁣ ⁣ Read our latest blog post, “ThnxBirthControl” to know 3 reasons why we chose it. ⁣ ⁣ ‎في الأسبوع الماضي، احتفت نساء العالم كل على حدا بالوسيلة التي تستخدمها لتنظيم الحمل و كيف شكل ذلك فارقاً كبيراً في حياتها للأفضل. قد يعتبر البعض مفهوم موانع الحمل كمفهوم حديث، إلا إن منع الحمل ممارسة عتيقة و موثقة بامتياز في مصر القديمة و بلاد ما بين النهرين ١٥٥٠ سنة قبل الميلاد. عبر العصور، استخدمت النساء ورق النبات الحصى و العسل كوسائل لمنع الحمل في السابق. ⁣ ⁣ ‎و في الثقافات التي لا تعيب الإجهاض، استخدم الإجهاض كوسيلة لتنظيم الحمل أيضاً.⁣ ⁣ ‎ليس هنالك شك في أن موانع الحمل الحديثة غيرت تاريخ النساء حول العالم، و كان لها تأثير عظيم في السماح للنساء بإكمال دراستهن امتهان مهنة وظيفية تحقيق أحلامهن و الظهور للعالم. إنه ليس أمراً سرياً بأن الوسيلة التي أستخدمها شخصياً هي طريقة وعي الخصوبة الرحلة التي قادتنا – أنا و شريكي- لاختيار هذه الطريقة كانت و ما زالت رائعة و تنمو معنا على الدوام. ⁣ ⁣ اقرؤوا مدونتنا الأخيرة بعنوان "شكراً وعي الخصوبة" لمعرفة ٣ أسباب لاختيارنا إياها.

(English). . حين نولد، ننتقل من أرحام أمهاتنا الأكثر أماناً لرحم العائلة. . بعد حيضنا الأول، ننتقل لرحم سنواتنا الشبابية، و بداية اتضاح رسالتنا الكونية حين ينقطع الحيض، ندخل رحم الأم الأكبر (الكون)، لنصل لمرحلة تفوق دورات الحياة بمراحلها و إتاحة الفرصة لأنفسنا لخدمة هذا العال كل بداية هي موت لمرحلة فنت، و ولادة لمرحلة جديدة لوعي أسمى.. أوسع.. أوفر.. ففي أي رحم تعيشون؟ When we are born, we leave our mothers’ safe wombs into the family metaphorical ‘womb’After our menarche, we leave the family ‘womb’ into the ‘womb’ of menstruating years, and getting a sense of our life Calling After menopause, we are welcomed into the arms of the Great Mama holding us, the Universe Each start is representing a death, followed by a beginning- a birth into a new level of awareness, bigger, newer, and more abundant.
