Parisians and world travellers are always swirling into the Shangri-La Hotel, Paris building, just like they did some 114 years ago. Originally built in 1896 as the home of French imperial Prince Roland Bonaparte, this is where one of the country’s most notable aristocratic families entertained. Its rediscovered history and cultural significance is at the core of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts’ first European property.

Understanding and respectful of its former relevance, the Hong Kong-based group, which operates over 90 hotels worldwide, listed the most historic areas of the former residential palace with Monuments Historiques. The pain-staking four-year renovation project (the original construction took the same amount of time), under the guidance of architect Richard Martinet and interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, is more proof of the hotel’s commitment to preserving French heritage.

Blending architecture from the 17th and 19th centuries, the 20,000-square metre building’s “eclectic style” is undoubtedly eye-catching. The palace’s facade is inspired by the Louis XIV era, while the two Ming Dynasty-style vases flanking the entryway set the tone for the Asia-meets-Paris elegance waiting inside. The naturally lit hotel lobby features high ceilings, refurbished marble and thoughtfully placed alcoves, while the prince’s imperial insignias and ornate monograms are interspersed with Asian influences around the hotel.

Rooms and Amenities at the Shangri-La, Paris

Within the 101 rooms, including 36 suites, the décor focuses on “Empire,” “Luxury minimalist” and sometimes a stunning mix of both. The majority of rooms and suites are large enough and equipped to entertain friends, family or business partners. What’s more, nearly half of them feature a private balcony, where guests can enjoy direct views of the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. Additionally, the hotel boasts three restaurants, two of which are Michelin-starred, Le Bar, CHI, The Spa and four historical events and reception rooms.

Situated on Avenue d’Iéna, in the elegant 16th arrondissement, the Shangri-La Hotel, Paris is located between the statue of George Washington and the Eiffel Tower. Its proximity to the Seine, its strategic location and the fact it’s in an area that has one of the highest concentrations of museums in Europe add to the reasons travellers are choosing to take a step back in time while in Paris.
